Hi friends,

Feeling Christmassy right?? Yeah me too:)

Yesterday my daughter had Christmas party in her school and they danced and sang…wow! what fun!! I miss my school days….

Anyway let’s go to the skin food world. So here F is for Flax seeds.

Yup, these tiny, little, brown seeds are so full of nutrition. Flax seeds are being hailed for their amazing health benefits and rightly so. They are full of nutrition and come at a very low price.

Although flax seeds contain many beneficial nutrients, the main components are:

  • Omega-3 essential fatty acids, “good” fats that have been shown to have heart-healthy effects. Each tablespoon of ground flaxseed contains about 1.8 grams of plant omega-3s.
  • Lignans, which have both plant estrogen and antioxidant qualities. Flaxseed contains 75 to 800 times more lignans than other plant foods.
  • Fiber. Flax seeds contain both the soluble and insoluble types of fiber.

Let us see how flax seeds benefit our skin.

  1. Good looking skin: Flax seeds are a rich source of omega 3 fatty acids. They are a boon for people who don’t eat fish and don’t like to take fish oil. (BTW walnuts are also a rich source of omega 3 fatty acids). omega 3 fatty acids are good fats which, apart from their other benefits, help to keep our skin looking good. These fatty acids are responsible for the health of the cell membrane, which not only what acts as the barrier to things that are harmful, but also the passageway for nutrients to cross in and out and for waste products to get in and out of the cell. Since the membrane is what influences the cells ability to hold water, having a nice, healthy barrier yields moister, softer, more subtle, and more wrinkle-free skin.
  2. Healthy skin: Flax seeds prevent dry, flaky skin by providing adequate moisturisation, thus preventing dry skin conditions like eczema.
  3. Anti inflammatory: The lignans present in flax seeds are powerful in healing and decreasing inflammation. They help in decreasing skin inflammations.
  4. Anti ageing: The anti oxidants present in flax seeds attack the free radicals and prevent oxidative damage to the cells. These free radicals damage the good cells and cause premature ageing of the cells including skin cells resulting in age spots and wrinkles.

Flax seeds are an essential addition to your daily meals. They are also a good source of protein. Here are the ways in which you can incorporate flax seeds in your meals:

  1. Add toasted and ground flax seeds to your morning cereal.
  2. Add flax seed powder to your whole wheat flour while making rotis.
  3. If you bake bread add to it for a nutty crunch.
  4. Add flaxseeds to a cup of yoghurt.
  5. Have toasted flax seeds as a mukhwas (digestive mouth freshener). Mix equal quantities of toasted flax seeds and toasted sesame seeds and have 1 or 2 teaspoons after meals. You can add fennel seeds too.

I am sure you all will surely start having flax seeds now.☺

Nuts and flax seed laddoo

1

This is a regular laddoo in my house. I use this to sneak in all kinds of nuts and seeds so that my daughter eats them. She has no idea;)

Ingredients:

1/2 cup peanuts

1/2 cup mix nuts almonds, pista, cashew nut

2 tbsp flax seeds

2 tbsp sunflower seeds

2 tbsp melon seeds

1 cup jaggery (I used organic, black jaggery)

2 tsp ghee

Method:

  1. Roast all the nuts separately and keep aside.
  2. Once cooled, coarsely grind all the nuts and seeds together.
  3. Grate the jaggery.
  4. Take the jaggery and the ground coarse powder in a mixie jar and grind together a few times.
  5. Keep checking and grind till everything us mixed.
  6. Take the mixture in your palms and try to make a laddoo. If a laddoo forms then it is done.
  7. Take it out in a plate.
  8. Grease your palms with ghee and make laddoos.

You can also make jaggery syrup and then make laddoos. But I love this no cook style. My granny used to make peanut laddoos in this style and I adapted it for my daughter. These laddoos are so easy, they are done in a jiffy. You can add other nuts and seeds as per your liking. They always turn out delicious.

Enjoy these health bombs!!

Stay healthy, Stay happy!!! Wish you all a very merry Christmas!!
